German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this Sunday, November 12: Berlin will double, to 8 billion euros, the military aid initially planned by his country for Ukraine in 2024. Main reason for this substantial effort of our neighbors across the Rhine: Germany’s desire to send a “strong signal” to the country candidate for membership of the EU to “tell it that we are not abandoning it”, despite considerable attention international focused on the conflict in the Middle East. The German government had initially planned an aid package, mainly in military equipment, to the tune of 4 billion euros.
Berlin was, however, far from being Europe’s bad student. Certainly far behind the United States and its 42.1 billion euros invested for military aid alone, Germany has still already provided 17.1 billion euros to contribute to Kiev’s war effort. This is almost three times more than the United Kingdom, and more than 34 times the amount paid by France.
Germany has also provided 2.48 billion euros in humanitarian aid to the country attacked by Russia in February 2022. This is accompanied by an amount of 1.3 billion dollars dedicated to aid financial to the Kiev regime.
