In the state of Texas, more than 4,000 jobs are to be replaced by AI. The aim is to save money and simplify work. But the enthusiasm is limited because so far the software still seems to be error-prone.
Artificial intelligence always causes excitement. As colleagues from the English-language magazine The Verge now report, the US state of Texas wants to introduce a new regulation in order to be able to replace humans with AI: So far, state exams have been evaluated by humans, but that is exactly what is about to change.
Exams will be taken over by AI and will replace 4,000 positions
What’s changing in Texas? In the future, AI will be responsible for grading state exams in Texas, which is why the number of examiners will drop from 6,000 in 2023 to fewer than 2,000 in 2024. The government promises savings of 20 million euros
Specifically, in the future, artificial intelligence will assess students’ skills in the areas of reading, writing, natural sciences and social studies. The problems are said to be limited because the AI is said to have been trained with 3,000 answers from the last exams.
What are the reactions? Texas Education Agency (TEA) Director Jose Rios said the agency wants to keep as many constructed, open-ended responses as possible, but the evaluation takes an incredible amount of time. With AI you want to save a lot of time and money.
But not everyone is inspired by the authority’s enthusiasm. Lewisville Independent School District Superintendent Lori Rapp said her district has seen a “drastic increase” in constructed responses that received zero points. The automatic system was tested here for the first time.
Rapp explained that it is currently not known whether the test questions were incorrect or the AI made mistakes. That still needs to be checked.
Replacing employees with AI is controversial and is rarely well received
What is the current situation? It is not uncommon for companies to replace their employees with AI. Because good AI can relieve a lot of work and replace people. Companies then like to talk about “cost optimization.” People repeatedly report that they are losing their jobs to AI or are receiving fewer and fewer orders because artificial intelligence takes over these tasks.
Are there secure jobs? The head of ChatGPT explained in an interview which professions AI cannot replace. In total, he came up with 34 professions that would be safe from artificial intelligence. In addition to bus drivers and hairdressers, these also include some other, lesser-known jobs:
