AI becomes compatible with old smartphones

Google intends to put AI everywhere. And for everyone! Gemini, its ChatGPT-style chatbot, should therefore be supported from Android 10, to be usable even on old smartphones.

More than a year ago now, Google announced with great fanfare Bard, its artificial intelligence intended to compete with ChatGPT. Since then, the Mountain View firm’s chatbot has evolved significantly, to the point of changing its name in early 2024 to Gemini. The Internet giant’s objective is clear: to integrate its artificial intelligence everywhere and in all its services. Including in our smartphones. For this, he can count on the Gemini application, which allows you to chat with the chatbot and set it as the default assistant – which means that it replaces the Google Assistant to respond to the famous “Hey Google”. However, until now, you had to have a phone running at least Android 12 to be able to take advantage of it. Suffice it to say that this limits the installation possibilities, as not everyone benefits from a state-of-the-art smartphone! But Google intends to expand its number of potential users…

Gemini application: a smartphone running Android 10 is enough

As a reminder, the Gemini application allows you to perform advanced text searches, translation, editorial help and all the functions that Google Bard already offered. Our colleagues atAndroid Authority have been informed, by their famous AssembleDebug source, of a discreet change in the configuration required to run Gemini. Indeed, the latest APK of the application (number 1.0.626720042) indicates that the latter now works on smartphones running Android 10 or higher. Information confirmed by the official Play Store page on April 22. Please note, however, you must have a device with at least 4 GB of RAM to be able to take advantage of it.

This is excellent news, because many smartphones are still running Android 10 and 11 – these are the most used versions, just after Android 13 and ahead of Android 12. Google’s AI can therefore be used on smartphones, some dating from 2018. Enough to convert new fans!
