Agreement on 50 billion Ukraine support at the EU summit

Earlier, Hungary blocked the aid package.

The EU has reached an agreement on a 50 billion euro support package for Ukraine. All 27 member states approved the aid package at an extraordinary summit in Brussels.

– This ensures stable, long-term and predictable funding for Ukraine, President of the European Council Charles Michel wrote in the message service X.

Back in December, Hungary opposed the support and the decision to support Ukraine was not made at that time. Since then, negotiations have been held with Hungary to resolve the matter. However, even before the extraordinary summit, it was unclear how Hungary is now dealing with the matter.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal praised the new decision.

– The EU countries showed their solidarity and unity towards Ukraine, he said.

Also the president Volodymyr Zelenskyi praised the decision and said it would strengthen Ukraine’s long-term economic situation.

Immediately after the settlement, it is not clear whether other EU countries made concessions to Hungary.

In the agreement on the support package, it is written that the center will receive it annually. The package would be evaluated every two years.

According to an EU source who spoke to the news agency Reuters, the funds frozen from Hungary will remain frozen despite the agreement. An EU source said Hungary still needs to meet the required conditions for the subsidies to be released.

Aid from Hungary has been frozen due to a violation of the rule of law. In December, the Commission released 10 billion euros to Hungary because, according to the Commission, the country had made progress in the required reforms. There are still 20 billion euros left.

EU countries have blamed Hungary’s autocratic prime minister Viktor Orbán about extortion with the support package issue.
