The foreign ministers of the Arab League member states met in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, where the union’s headquarters is located, before the Arab League Summit to be held in Saudi Arabia on May 19. During the meeting, which was closed to the press, it was decided to return Syria to the union in the voting made by the foreign ministers of the member countries. Thus, Syria will have returned to unity after a 12-year hiatus.
In a report in the Saudi newspaper Al Majalla, it was stated that Syria’s return to the Arab League was conditional on taking steps to resolve the civil war in the country.
Syria’s membership in the Arab League was suspended after President Bashar Assad ordered a crackdown and violent intervention against anti-government activists in the country’s civil war that began in 2011. (UAV)
