After last winter’s extreme weather and traffic disruptions, several measures have been identified to ensure better accessibility and safety, writes the Swedish Transport Administration in a press release.
– I expect that we may have heavy snow storms this year as well and we have ensured that the Swedish Transport Administration is better equipped than ever to keep the roads safe and passable, says Roberto Maiorana, Director General of the Swedish Transport Administration.
In addition to the chaos on the E4 and E20 in April, the Swedish Transport Administration has analyzed the incidents on the E22 in January, when large numbers of travelers were stuck in the cold.
Faster decisions
Among other things, the regional management has been strengthened for faster decisions in the event of emergency incidents, and a new working method has been introduced to be able to quickly move blocking vehicles. The Swedish Transport Administration has also improved cooperation with contractors and other authorities to streamline the handling of weather-related challenges. The collaboration with SMHI has been deepened to make weather warnings more user-friendly and easier to interpret.
It was at the beginning of April that heavy snowfall led to traffic chaos in Jönköping County, when road users had to spend the night in their vehicles stuck on the E4. The clip below hears some of those who got stuck.
