Sweden’s forests have been teeming with gold this year.
Several mushroom pickers testify to a real “chanterelle”.
But now the amount may have reached its peak, and as early as next week it may begin, reports say Today’s industry.
Anyone who has gone out into the forest to pick mushrooms so far this summer has been able to return with a smile. On social media and in the Facebook group “Kantareller”, the feeds are filled with pictures of overflowing baskets, boxes, bags and trunks with mushrooms.
Nor has it mattered where in the country you live. From north to south, mushroom pickers have testified to an abundance of chanterelles.
The gold of the forest
Sweden’s largest mushroom buyer is Wermland’s forest supply. They buy chanterelles from private individuals who are registered sellers, and agree with the image of abundance.
– I have never seen so much this early in my 30 years in the industry. We are currently receiving between 1 and 2 tons per day. Compare that to 2018, which was a dry year, when we received 3 kilos during the whole of July. This year we are moving towards 20 tonnes,” says Ola Hultman, CEO of Wermland’s forest storage to Dagens Industri.
“Could be the end of the season”
With variable weather throughout July, the opportunities have been there for the chanterelles to thrive. Now we are moving towards an increased high pressure, which can also lead to the climax being reached.
“Unfortunately, it looks doubtful after this week, it will be warm and not rain, so it could be the end of the season because then they will dry out and as long as it doesn’t rain, there won’t be anything new,” says Ola Hultman to Dagens Industri .
