After the murder: Sharpened focus on security during Almedal Week

During this year’s Almedal week, around 30 so-called Almedal hosts will move around the area. They must be able to answer questions from visitors, but are also extra eyes and ears.

– If there is anything suspicious or if someone looks unwell, they can quickly report it to us and then we make the decision on how to handle it further.

No security checks

Psychiatry coordinator Ing-Marie Wieselgren was murdered outside an outdoor restaurant during last year’s politicians’ week in Almedalen.

The incident has meant that the focus has been sharpened in terms of security issues, both within Region Gotland, which hosts the week, but also with many of the organizations that come to Visby to organize events. But there will be no security checks on visitors.

The police are also working to increase security, says Fredrik Persson, head of police area Gotland, in an email to SVT Nyheter Öst:

“Together, we are now in the phase of jointly planning for and taking some measures to increase security and increase safety. Based on the previous year’s tragic event, it is clear that it in itself creates anxiety and insecurity about this year’s implementation for many. The police, the Security Police and Region Gotland will do a lot of work before and during the implementation so that people who participate can feel safe.”
