There are three staircases in the apartment building on Bäckby in Västerås that caught fire on Thursday evening. In two of the floors, the tenants must have been allowed to come home.
In the third, where Mageda Ali Shafeek lives, much is destroyed – she and her neighbors are now homeless. She has just attended the crisis and information meeting for victims when SVT meets her in the parking lot outside the house.
She says that the sons spent the night at their sister’s, she and her husband at the sister-in-law’s. For the weekend, at the urging of their insurance company, they have booked a hotel room. What happens afterwards remains to be seen.
Support from several sides
During Friday morning, SVT Nyheter Västmanland spoke to several of the families affected by the fire. Among them are families with children. Many are distressed and say that it is difficult to know which end to start at.
– We left home without anything. We have no nappies, gruel or clothes for the children, says one mother.
