After a slight lull, violence resumed in the 101st French department, as did the arrivals of illegal migrants on makeshift boats. Another difficulty for the authorities: the dismantling of dozens of shanty towns. The President of the Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, who is finishing a trip to Mayotte, approached one of them yesterday, Friday January 12, on the outskirts of Mamoudzou.

Unsanitary

In this slum, 75 families live in bangas, small houses in jail. Most of the inhabitants are foreigners, half of them in an irregular situation. Below the village, a threat constantly looms: a river. For the mayor of Mamoutzou, Ambdil Wehou, “ when he goes up, he can easily carry the bangas which are at this level. Beyond the unsanitary conditions and the precariousness of the occupants, it is above all the protection of people, with regard to flooding and landslides.. »

Amidst the trash, the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, begins a discussion with a mother: “ How long ago did you arrive here? ”, she asks. “ Since 2009 », replies his interlocutor. “ So, since 2009, you have lived in this type of habitat? », says Ms. Braun-Pivet. This Comorian woman does not want to leave her makeshift home. And even if she wanted to, rehousing solutions are rare on the island. There is no census but several tens of thousands of people live in slums in Mayotte.

We need means

According to Estelle Youssouffa, MP for the island, illegal immigration must absolutely be stopped: “ The first problem for Mayotte, far ahead of all the rest, (It is) the massive influx of populations which is not counted. Mayotte is waiting for the State to work on issues of illegal immigration and the destruction of shanty towns. »

Since the end of Operation Wuambushu, elected officials have called for more resources, especially at sea, to fight against the arrival of migrant boats.
