After the criticism: New national support line for people in mental crisis opens this autumn

In 2020, the national helpline for people in mental crisis, which was funded by the country’s regions, was closed.

The decision has been criticized by, among others, the voluntary organizations Suicide Zero and the Suicide Line Mind, which in SVT Nyheter Uppsala’s review said that “of course there should be a state-funded national support line against mental illness, with certified staff”.

  • After SVT’s disclosure: “It is completely reprehensible”

  • Now the support line should be opened up again.

    – For those who are in an acute mental crisis, it can be decisive that support is available, says Jakob Forssmed (KD).

    Bet 22 million

The national helpline must be staffed by licensed personnel 24 hours a day, every day of the week. The support line must also be open to relatives of people with mental illness. Anyone using the service must be able to remain anonymous.

Now the Public Health Agency is tasked with appointing an actor who will run the national support line. In total, the government is allocating 22 million kroner to the investment, which according to Jakob Forssmed could be up and running in the autumn.
