After the best monster movie of the last 10 years

A student is kidnapped and turned into a cyborg, but instead of serving evil, he fights against his “creators”. Roughly speaking, this is the story of the Superhero franchise Kamen Riderwhich is now 50 years old.

The latest film Shin Kamen Rider has been streaming in Germany on Amazon Prime Video since Friday. It only premiered in Japan in March.

The superhero film is part of a sci-fi universe

Shin Kamen Rider is the one third entry in the so-called Shin Japan Heroes Universe. In each installment, a different legendary Japanese franchise will be given a makeover. Part 1, Shin Godzilla, was one of the best monster movies in recent years and Part 2, Shin Ultraman, was a highly entertaining sci-fi adventure featuring gorgeous beasts.

As with the excellent kaiju film Shin Godzilla, Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) is directing and writing the Kamen Rider update.

That’s what Shin Kamen Rider on Amazon is all about

Sôsuke Ikematsu (Shoplifters – Family Ties) plays Takeshi Hongo, a college student who is led by an infernal organization reassuringly titled SHOCKER (Sustainable Happiness Organization with Computational Knowledge Embedded Remodeling) is kidnapped.

The organization wants turn the innocent into invincible warriors, so-called Kaijin. This is done using cyborg technology. In the Kamen Rider storyline, the organization tries to create a grasshopper-human hybrid out of the student, but Takeshi Hongo escapes. He uses his newly gained powers to put a stop to the villains of SHOCKER as a superhero.

Shin Kamen Rider

Shin Kamen Rider didn’t achieve the impressive box office numbers of its predecessors in its home country, but it still garnered good reviews. Simon Abrams writes:

Shin Kamen Rider remains compelling and thoughtful, both as an expression of Anno’s instantly recognizable style and as an oddly moving expression of the titular hero’s restless mind. You might not believe that you could be so moved by a superhero movie about a grasshopper man on a bicycle. But you would be wrong. Podcast: 15 Insider Tips You Can Stream For Free
