After the fall of the Barnier government at the beginning of December, the New Popular Front (NFP) found itself divided on the question of a new motion of censure against François Bayrou. However, the new Prime Minister’s lack of openness towards left-wing forces, some of whom were ready to collaborate with him, ended up convincing the NFP to unite once again. This is to prepare to overthrow the government with censorship.

The ministers of the new French government have barely been installed, the Socialist Party is already threatening to brandish the weapon of censorship, accusing the executive of being too ” addicted » from the far right. “ None of the conditions of the non-censorship pact were respected », decided on Tuesday December 24 Olivier Faure, leader of the Socialist Party. He pointed the finger at a government composition which would not have kept any of the expected commitments.
He specified that his group could vote for censure as soon as the Prime Minister’s general policy declaration on January 14.

Negotiation attempt, without LFI
In the background, and even before the fall of the government Barnierdiscussions had intensified between the left wing of the presidential camp and the socialists, ecologists and communists. Everyone was eager to distance themselves from La France insoumise (LFI). The objective was simple: to lay the foundations of a solid political alternative.
The Modem, the party of François Bayrousharing points in common with the Socialist Party, particularly on taxation, suggested a possible rapprochement. With the appointment of François Bayrou to Matignon, there was hope.
The socialists, the first to be invited to discuss with the new Prime Minister, arrived with a precise idea: to avoid a motion of censure in exchange for concessions, including the suspension of the pension reform.

Negotiations at an impasse
But quickly, the discussions came to an end. The message from the emissaries of the New Popular Front, a sort of “ help us help you », did not find an echo with François Bayrou.
The return of personalities like Manuel Valls to the government was the last straw for the PS. Faced with what they consider to be a lack of helping hands, Olivier Faure announced the filing of a new motion of censure.
A decision which did not surprise LFI, skeptical from the start about attempts at dialogue with the presidential camp. Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s camp judges these attempts doomed to failure.
