He is one of the activists who fought against al-Assad’s now overthrown regime. But he was forced to flee. During the last ten years, he has lived in Sweden, under a Swedish name on the advice of the Security Police. The last time Fadi Zaidan was in the capital Damascus was in 2012.
SVT follows Fadi Zaidan when he, together with his wife, returns home to Syria for the first time. In the car, he sits wrapped in a Syrian flag bought many years ago in Kalmar and with a big smile on his face.
– I never thought I would have it in my home country, in Syria, he says.
Once back, he can state that Fredrik Andersson – the name he has lived with for the past decade – is no longer needed.
– Fredrik is going to die now, says Fadi and laughs.
