After SVT’s review: Personnel should be trained about Münchhausen by Proxy

Lovisa Thåström suffered from severe abdominal pain, blood and difficulties vomited to get food. But when no treatments worked, staff at the Sachsska Children’s Hospital, which is part of the Södersjukhuset, began to suspect her mother for Münchhausen by Proxy.

Got longed for surgery

But both the police and social services suspicions were closed down and SVT has been able to reveal how Lovisa was met by doctors at the hospital through secret sound recordings.

The documentary led to a physician no longer being allowed to work patient -close, while SÖS appointed an investigation.

After the time at Sachsska, Lovisa changed Hospital, regained its original diagnosis and underwent surgery to deal with the problems.

All personnel should be trained

The investigation is now complete and identifies several areas of improvement. Among other things, it is about increasing the competence in the treatment of patients where there is suspicion of Münchhausen by Proxy. This will be done through lectures of experts and training for all staff in the children’s and youth activities.

“In a next step, this training will continue throughout the hospital,” writes Sös Press Manager Michael Tot Norberg in a comment to SVT.

The Inspection for Healthcare and Care has also examined the case but has not found deficiencies in the medical treatment. IVO notes that Lovisa’s disease state has been complicated and difficult to assess. The experts in SÖ’s investigation also make the same assessment.

Regarding the care of the care against Lovisa, IVO’s press department in an email responds that it is not something they take a position on. The case has now been appealed.

“Will strengthen the business”

The doctor who appears in SVT’s review works at the Sachska Children’s Hospital with continued confidence.

How has the doctor himself motivated his actions?

“We do not comment on individual employees. On the other hand, it is our conviction that the action plan will strengthen the business so well professionally in the clinical work, as relieving from a work environment -supporting perspective, ”writes Michael Tot Norberg.
