After SVT’s review: Demand for immediate measures at apartment buildings in Skultuna

SVT Nyheter Västmanland reported in February about an apartment building in Skultuna that had major flaws – and where several apartments lacked building permits.

The City Planning Administration in Västerås started an inspection case after SVT’s reporting and visited the property together with the Mälardalen Rescue Service and the Environmental and Health Protection Administration. Everyone had views and remarks on the property. Officers on site noted, among other things, that it “didn’t look good” and that it “wasn’t a good standard of living”.

When SVT talks to the property owner, he has a different view.

– You can always find little things if you look. The most important thing is fixed. Everything will be fixed, every single thing.

Three injunctions

On 30 April 2024, three orders were issued regarding ventilation, insulation of windows and fire protection. Something that requires immediate action by the property owner.

– In the first stage, the injunction is not associated with a fine, but you are given a limited time to remedy the deficiencies. If it is not remedied, there may be a fine, explains Robin Eklund Olsson, head of department of the Urban Development Administration of the City of Västerås.

“Storm in a glass”

According to information to SVT, the property owner has expressed his desire to appeal the decisions.

– I think it’s a storm in a teacup. I have been given some time to do this and I don’t understand why you should get involved in this, he says to SVT.

No later than six months after the day on which the decision gained legal force is deemed to be sufficient time to remedy the deficiencies according to the City Planning Administration’s decision.

The tenants Arne, Daniel and Katharina, who were with SVT’s earlier reporting, have moved out of the apartments in Skultuna during the spring.

In the clip, Robin Eklund Olsson talks about the most serious of the deficiencies and the property owner gives his view on the matter.
