With Aquaman: Lost Kingdom, the old DC Universe has finally said goodbye to the big screen. There is now one to match exciting look into the future of the huge comic franchise. Under the leadership of director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran, a new DC universe is currently being created at Warner.
The most powerful character has already been cast: David Corenswet takes on the role of the Man of Steel in Superman: Legacy, which was last played by Henry Cavill in the cinema. But it’s not just Superman who plays a major role in the new films. Also his cousin, Supergirlis a crucial part of the story.

As Deadline reports, there is currently three favorites for the role, which will soon prove in test screenings whether they have what it takes to be a superhero. The list is headed by a newcomer who thrilled us in Westeros two years ago and could now change the hierarchy in the DCU.

Meg Donnelly is on the list as the US representative. She became famous through Disney’s Zombies trilogy. She took on a recurring role in the third season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Her most notable role was as Mary Campbell in the Supernatural spin-off The Winchesters.
Donnelly has one small lead compared to her competitors: In the animated film Legion of Super-Heroes, released in 2023, she lent her voice to Supergirl. Donnelly will also record the part again in the recording studio in the upcoming Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part One.

However, no decision has been made yet. As Deadline notes, Gunn is personally overseeing the Supergirl casting, as this is one of the most important casts in the new DC universe. Supergirl will not only appear in her own film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but will also appear in other projects, possibly even Superman: Legacy.
The story of the film goes back to the relatively new comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. In 2022, author Tom King published this highly acclaimed fantasy adventures. Now actress and screenwriter Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries) is taking over the adaptation. It is not yet clear who will direct the production.
When does Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow start in cinemas?
There is currently no release date for the Supergirl film. But we know when Superman: Legacy will be released: On July 10, 2025 comes the first DCU film. Maybe we’ll get to see the new Kara Zor-El in a cameo.
The character was most recently portrayed by Sasha Calle in The Flash. Before that, Melissa Benoist took on the iconic role in the Arrowverse. The first-ever Supergirl actress Helen Slater was in the cinema in the film adaptation of the same name from 1984.
