After rework, magicians look down the drain – big nerfs for fire, arcane and frost

Dark times for mages in World of Warcraft. After the rework, there are now some hard nerfs.

World of Warcraft patch 10.1.5 was cause for celebration for many mages. Because finally there was a long-awaited rework, where some of the disruptive talents – like the infamous “Rune of Power” – were removed from the game. Others were sad that the trusty companion Water Elemental can only be temporarily summoned.

Now there’s another reason for dissatisfaction: A few major nerfs are pending.

What is nerfed? Basically, the total damage done by the magician is nerfed, although the focus is mostly on area damage. The changes in detail are:

  • Fire
  • The damage of all abilities is reduced by 5%.
  • Flame Blast deals 6% less damage and now deals less damage when hitting more than 8 targets.
  • Flame Field deals 6% less damage and now deals less damage when hitting more than 8 targets.
  • Blessing of the Sun King now causes your next Pyroblast or Flamestrike to deal 260% more damage (was 275% more damage).
  • frost
  • Frozen Orb deals 5% less damage.
  • Blizzard deals 4% less damage.
  • Comet Storm deals 5% less damage.
  • Sub-zero increases damage to immobilized and frozen targets by 5% / 10% (from 10% / 20%).
  • arcane
  • Arcane Barrage deals 3% more damage.
  • Resonance increases damage per target hit by Arcane Barrage by 10% (up from 12%).
  • Arcane Explosion deals 6% less damage.
  • Arcane Orb deals 8% less damage.
  • When are the nerfs going live? With the next server maintenance next Wednesday, i.e. on 07/19/2023. Until then, you should still use the power of the mages to maybe master the new mega-dungeon “Dawn of the Eternal”.

Why is Blizzard doing this? Anyone who has been out with a magician in the last few days who knew halfway what he was doing should have been quite surprised at the damage he caused. Because mages had it surprisingly easy not only to lead the DPS meter, but also to have a more than clear lead over the next group member. Especially in area damage situations, the mages were simply too strong, with the exception of fire mages: they were just always too strong.

Blizzard is therefore now improving and restricting the power of all magicians a bit.

What do you think of these nerfs? A good thoughtful thing? Or is that ruining the class that just got made “playable” again?
