After rain comes snowfall: “Joy in the November darkness”

On Thursday morning, many residents of Scania were surprised by snowfall. At the same time, there is also a warning for high flows in southern Skåne.
– Compared to all the rain that has come, the snow is much more welcome, says Martina Thydell, a resident of Hjärnarp.

That snowfall reaches Skåne so early in the year is unusual, according to Ibro Vojnikovic who lives in Helsingborg and was surprised by a snowfall early on Thursday morning.

– There has been a lot in southern Skåne. It is very unusual. Most of the time we never have winter. Mid-November is very early. It is rare that we have snow, but all of a sudden it came, says Martina Thydell.

Even further north it was snow-covered during Thursday morning.

– It is of course a joy in the November darkness that the snow has arrived and lights up a little. Compared to all the rain that has come, the snow is much more welcome. It enables more activity with the children outdoors compared to when it rains, says Martina Thydell, a resident of Hjärnarp.

Warns of high flows

But despite the snow surprise, the weather in Skåne is changing. Among other things, SMHI has issued a warning for high flows in southern Skåne and Sölvesborg municipality.

– It will last over the weekend. But it culminates on Friday, locally at very high levels as it continues to rain. And even if it snows, it doesn’t matter because it will probably melt, says Peter Kondrup, meteorologist at TV4.

The warning applies from Thursday and until further notice. Among other things, it warns of high current speeds in the waterways and flows that occur “on average every 5 to 25 years”, SMHI writes on its website.

That’s how long the snow lasts

– The nice white was early this morning. But now it has disappeared and become slush. As usual in Skåne. But this morning it was nice, says Ibro Vojnikovic.

In northern Scania, however, it may change to snowfall again during the night.

– Where it has changed to rain, it will continue to be so. By nightfall, it may change to snowfall again, according to Peter Kondrup.
