After Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan could film one of the best sci-fi series of all time – his first attempt failed 15 years ago

After Oppenheimer Christopher Nolan could film one of the best

With Oppenheimer, director Christopher Nolan has embarked on a triumph that we have rarely seen in the cinema in recent years. Nolan turned the story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer into a mega blockbusterwhose hype doesn’t seem to be dying down even months after its theatrical release.

The crowning conclusion of this triumphant march: the Academy Awards ceremony last weekend. Oppenheimer won 7 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Now the film world is looking excitedly towards Nolan and asking itself: What does he do next? Basically all doors are open to him.

According to Oppenheimer: The next Christopher Nolan film could be a remake of the sci-fi series The Prisoner

The next Christopher Nolan film has not yet been officially announced. But Variety asked around and unearthed two interesting snippets of information that give us a first feel for where Nolan’s journey in Hollywood might be headed.

  • Option 1: Christopher Nolan is filming a remake of the British sci-fi series number 6 (originally: The Prisoner), which was first broadcast from 1967 to 1968 and is considered a milestone in the series’ history.
  • Option 2: After Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan turns to new material and, as he recently did with the sci-fi thriller Tenet, writes an original story that comes entirely from his head.

    Christopher Nolan filming Oppenheimer

Anyone who has followed Nolan’s work over the past few years will be familiar with Number 6 aka The Prisoner. Already in 2009 The director was linked to a film version of the landmark series, as the Guardian reported at the time. Ultimately, however, the project did not come to fruition.

One of the reasons was the series remake The Prisoner, released in the same year, which was met with critical acclaim little enthusiasm has been recorded. This made another remake unattractive for many studios. Ridley Scott’s planned film remake, which made the rounds in 2016, also never manifested itself on the big screen.

The Prisoner was created by Patrick McGoohan, who also played the lead role. The unnamed character is only referred to as Number 6 in the series. It is a former British secret agent, who quits his job. He is then kidnapped and interrogated as to why he submitted his resignation.

The original series mixes elements from different genres. The Prisoner is science fiction, mystery, drama and psychological thriller at the same time. In addition, the series caused quite a stir due to its unconventional nature experimental design caused a stir in the 1960s – an abstract, provocative spy story.

All of this sounds like perfect ingredients for a new Nolan film, especially in view of Tenet, which draws on spy film tropes all in one cool thought game alienated. But as written at the beginning: Nolan’s next film has not yet been officially announced. It could also be something completely different.
