Breton, who visited Finland, believes that NATO membership would take Finland to the heart of European defense policy.
The possible NATO membership of Finland and Sweden would also be important for the development of the common defense of the European Union, French EU Commissioner Thierry Breton said in an interview with on Friday.
According to him, European defense capabilities would increase and military industrial cooperation would increase as a result of NATO membership.
– All other EU countries have decided to increase their defense spending to more than 2% of GDP. That means we have the resources to buy more and combine all of our defense efforts in the future, Breton says.
According to him, Finland has already been an important member of the EU’s defense projects. NATO membership would put it at the heart of European defense policy.
– We NATO allies have a common vision of defense, how it should be developed, and we also define together who are not friends of NATO, Breton says.
According to Breton, yesterday’s decision by the Finnish state leadership to apply for NATO membership was also a historic day for the development of EU defense.
During his visit to Finland, Breton met with, among other things, the Minister of Defense Antti Kaikkonen (center) and the Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilän (center).
