After having ravaged the French archipelago from Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, Cyclone Chido, with winds of more than 220 km/h, also caused significant damage during its passage Mozambique. The main region affected is Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, where more than 25,000 families are without electricity.
Nearly 24,000 houses were completely destroyed, 12,300 others were partially destroyed, according to the new assessment drawn up by the National Institute for Risk and Disaster Management. According to the Institute, more than 181,000 people were affected by Chido in this Portuguese-speaking country regularly hit by natural disasters.
The cyclone also damaged two water supply facilities, in a region already grappling with a cholera epidemic. Currently, UNICEF estimates that around 4.8 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Mozambique.
Repeated cyclones in the region
This new crisis comes in a region already in the grip of a security conflict since 2017. In February, attacks in the south of Cabo Delgado led to nearly 100,000 internal displacements, particularly towards the neighboring province of Nampula, which was also affected by the cyclone.
Unicef ββin Mozambique estimates that it needs 10 million dollars to respond to the numerous emergency situations caused by the devastation of Chido. In southern Africa, hurricane seasons are increasingly violent: storm Idai in 2019 caused 400 deaths. Last year, Cyclone Fredy caused around a hundred deaths.
