After almost 2 years I cancel PS Plus Extra because Sony doesn’t offer me enough on the PS5

MeinMMO editor Benedikt Schlotmann will soon be using 2 years of PS Plus Extra on the PS5. But he is sure that the subscription will not be renewed.

What kind of models are these? In case you haven’t noticed, Sony has scrapped the old PS Plus model and introduced three new subscription models for PS Plus. These have been available since June 23, 2022. All three models offer different benefits and cost different amounts.

About a month after the new models were launched, I upgraded my PS Plus subscription from Essential to Extra. At the time, it was only around 20 euros as part of a Sony promotion. I’ve stuck with Extra since then, but now I’m happy to cancel my subscription in July.

PS Plus Extra simply offers me too little as a long-time player on the PS5

Why am I canceling now? Sony has significantly increased the price of PS Plus: Until now, I paid 99.99 euros annually for PS Plus Extra. But since September 6, 2023, I have to pay 125.99 euros, which is a whopping 26 euros more than before. Just a comparison of the prices again:

  • PlayStation Plus Essential costs 71.99 euros for 12 months (previously 59.99 euros).
  • PlayStation Plus Extra costs 125.99 euros for 12 months (previously 99.99 euros).
  • PlayStation Plus Premium costs 151.99 euros for 12 months (previously 119.99 euros).
  • After almost 2 years, I think that Sony simply doesn’t offer me enough with PlayStation Plus Extra. Similar to the Xbox Game Pass, Extra also offers me access to around 400 PlayStation games, but they are almost all old “stuff.” As a long-time PlayStation player, I have already bought most of the “classics” or played them at some point.

The new blockbusters, such as the controversial Stellar Blade, are generally not released for PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium. So if I really want to play current titles, I have to buy them. And Extra doesn’t offer me a discount for the PS Store. The Epic Game Store does that, for example, where I get 5% of the purchase price back as credit.

Overall, the Xbox Game Pass has the edge because I can try out many new games without having to spend 70 euros straight away, such as Starfield or Forza Motorsport 8.

Unlike my colleague Niko, who is enthusiastic about the new PS Plus subscription, I am not a huge fan of Japanese and strange games. I love the Persona series and (almost) all Ghibli films, but spending a hefty 125 euros a year on them is too much for me.

With “strange” games that are supposed to define the character of Extra or Premium, I certainly won’t be convinced to take out a subscription that now costs 26 euros more.

Do I stay with PS Plus? I will definitely cancel Extra, that’s for sure. I will definitely use PS Plus for another 2 or 3 months, as the new add-on for Elder Scrolls: Online, “Gold Road,” is coming out soon. And I personally prefer the PS5 version to the PC version, even though I have to wait 2 weeks longer for the release than on the PC. But the update manager on the PC is just awful, I much prefer my PS5 and the technology on it.

In the future, I will certainly think twice about whether I will switch back to the Extra or Premium model.

Is the PS5 still worth it? The PS5 is now over 3 years old. But is it still worth buying a PS5 in 2024? MeinMMO looks at the advantages and disadvantages of the Sony console and explains what you need to consider if you are thinking about buying one: Is it still worth buying a PS5 in 2024?
