After al-Assad’s fall – this is how the balance of power looks in the immediate area

The Assad family has had Syria in its grip for over 50 years.

Now it is instead the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) that has taken over Syria. Shortly after taking power, HTS stated that they want to see a peaceful transition of power with a transitional government.

– Turkey is likely to gain great influence over the regime in Syria. Turkey’s policy that Assad must go has now yielded results, says Paul Levin, director of the Institute for Turkish Studies at Stockholm University.

Iran and Russia

The Assad family’s most important allies were Iran and Russia, which invested both politically and militarily in the country. Their position in the region is weakening.

– According to reports, Russia has asked Turkey for help in evacuating its soldiers. It is an almost humiliating request from Russia, says Levin.
