After abuse in home care – new employees are required on register extracts

Three men in the Nyby home care area are suspected of abuse of the elderly: Two suspected rapes and three sex offenses according to UNT’s review.

The municipality must now introduce checks from the load register for new hires.

– This can apply to many professional groups in addition to elderly care. Those who work close to the vulnerable, those who work with financial decisions, with land instructions and building permits, for example, says Erik Pelling.

Camera surveillance for the elderly at night

Between 2008 and 2018, the municipality required extracts from the criminal record when healthcare staff were newly hired. But it ended after a debate about whether it was legal except for staff working with children and young people.

However, checking already employed people is not legal, something the government wants to change.

– We are waiting for a change in the law and want to prepare for it, says Erik Pelling.

Other measures following the domestic service scandal are various random checks and two manager trainings to prevent the wrong people from being hired. Elderly people with home care must also, for example, receive camera surveillance for increased supervision at night.

– It is voluntary but can be an opportunity for increased security, says Tobias Smedberg (V), chairman of the elderly council.
