It was during a fishing trip in August 2019 that a young British mother suffered a superficial injury to her thigh. Four years later, his infected leg is still not cured.
It’s a chilling accident. While enjoying a fishing session, a mother, Michelle Milton, injured her thigh. A simple scratch – she thinks – that will quickly turn into a real nightmare.
His fishing rod touched his thigh
It was in the middle of vacation that the tragedy occurred. The young mother was enjoying the pleasures of fishing when she started “slide on a rock” – explains the newspaper The New York Post.
Part of his nylon line then pierced his thigh. Soon his leg swelled and a fever developed.
The mother then went to Basildon Hospital, in Essex, a few days later. To stop the infection, doctors gave her antibiotics but she became resistant to the treatment. They were therefore forced to incise his thigh: pus was present.
Doctors then take an x-ray of his leg.
“They had no idea what was going on“, revealed the young woman. “The pain intensified and the infection continued to spread to my leg. They just kept prescribing me antibiotics.”
The doctors then cleaned the wound… without much success. His gaping wound did not heal.
4 skin grafts, 30 washings and 21 debridements
Over the next four years, Michelle Milton underwent four skin grafts, 30 washings and 21 debridements (consisting of removing necrotic materials and/or devitalized tissues) to remove infected tissue.
A few months later, for lack of a better solution, doctors equipped the wound with a pump to suck out the pus. A final attempt, which exhausts the young woman.
“I don’t know how much more I can take. I haven’t been a mom in years. My mother does everything for my children“, confides the mother, who can barely”walk or sit“.
Resolute, Michelle Milton now hopes to be “amputate“to resume her life, she who still cannot believe”just a scratch” caused him so much harm.
The opinion of Doctor Gérald KIERZEK, emergency physician and medical director of Doctissimo
“A wound or injury should not be neglected, especially if it is deep, transfixing or if the exact penetration into the skin or muscles cannot be assessed. Any wound is a gateway for bacteria and there is a risk of infection. Disinfection, anti-tetanus vaccination and even preventive surgical exploration are necessary to limit the risks.
