Tom Tykwer is one of the few German filmmakers who effortlessly switches between major local and international projects. Over the course of his career, he has filmed with Hollywood stars such as Tom Hanks and Clive Owen and undertaken ambitious co-productions à la Cloud Atlas with the Wachowski sisters.
However, his last feature film was a long time ago: the 2016 drama A Hologram for the King marked Tykwer’s last directorial work for the big screen. Since 2017 he has been involved as one of the leading forces in the series epic Babylon Berlin. Now it’s announced Cinema comeback to.

The Light is the title of Tykwer’s first feature film in eight years. The story is reported in the recent press release as “Portrait of a Family” described themselves “between collapse and new beginning” located. The camera slowly moves through the darkness towards a prefabricated building in Berlin. In an apartment a bright light flashes – you could almost think that young Harry Potter is practicing the Lumos magic under the blanket. But the mood at Tykwer is much more spooky. Something doesn’t seem right here.
In The Light we learn this Engels family know. Father Tim (Lars Eidinger) and mother Milena (Nicolette Krebitz) are not only estranged from themselves, but also from their children, the almost adult twins Frieda (Elke Biesendorfer) and Jon (Julius Gause). Nothing holds this family together anymore.
It is precisely at this point that the Syrian-born housekeeper Farrah (Tala Al Deen) enters the Engels’ lives and ensures that the individual family members question their attitudes and relationships with one another. We’ll be curious to see how the ominous teaser and mysterious light fit in with this story.
It wasn’t just Berlin that served as a backdrop for Das Licht. Filming also took place in the surrounding area of the big city as well as in North Rhine-Westphalia and Kenya. When the project was announced, Tykwer was enthusiastic about turning his back on the historical backdrop of Babylon Berlin for a detour to the present:

In The Light there are arguments, wrestling and fighting, but there is also laughter, singing and dancing. The film wants the spectrum of feelings and the corresponding ones challenge narrative possibilities. And the characters are very familiar to me. The light starts on March 25, 2025 in the cinema. By then, nine years will have passed since Tykwer’s last film. The theatrical release also leads to speculation as to whether The Light will premiere at the Berlinale, which will take place from February 13th to 23rd, 2025. Tykwer has been a regular guest at the film festival since the 1990s.
