After 8 years, a survival game on Steam reaches a milestone that no one would have believed at the beginning

Few games on Steam manage to turn negative player opinions around. After all, first impressions are pretty important. However, a few rare examples show that developers can change the community’s mind with enough updates and patience. A well-known survival game reached an important milestone after 8 years.

What game is it about? In 2016, No Man’s Sky from Hello Games was supposed to be the big new survival star. Players were promised almost endless possibilities in space together with friends. But at the time of release there was hardly any sign of the big promises.

Players were angry, and it showed in the Steam reviews. At the beginning they were mostly negative. A pretty bad stamp for a game. But the developers regularly delivered new updates, which also increased the number of players.

After 8 years, this seems to have paid off as the game has now reached a new milestone. All reviews are now very positive. Many people praise the developer, but some users on Reddit are not happy with it.

The developer is happy, but some players aren’t celebrating

How did the developers react? The founder of Hello Games celebrated the new milestone on x.com. There he wrote: “Thank you, thank you, thank you. You don’t know what this means to us.” Many users congratulate the studio under the tweet:

  • @MisterBiter: You are an example of what the industry should strive for.
  • @NewVariant24: The greatest redemption arc of all time. Congratulations to you and your team for all the hard work and dedication that brought you back from the depths.
  • @GateSharks: Congratulations, you deserve it.
  • The new milestone is also being discussed on Reddit. Some users there are less euphoric and still criticize the false promises:

  • jbert146: I still think they should be fined until forgotten. The extent of the […] false claims made by Sean Murray himself on launch day were absolutely insane.
  • Practicalaviationcat: I like that they continue to update the game, but it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
  • CWPL-21: I’m really happy for people who can finally enjoy the game. For me it’s nothing.
  • Despite the criticism from some users, many here congratulate the new milestone and write how much they are now enjoying the game.

But you have to give the developers one thing. Despite the poor release, the game has been worked on for 8 years, with regular updates and new content. No Man’s Sky is now also one of the best survival games you can currently play: The 29 best survival games of 2024 for PS5, Steam and Xbox
