After 671 years on Netflix: The medieval story The Decameron was so messed up that it was banned and censored for centuries

After 671 years on Netflix The medieval story The Decameron

In 1353, a group of wealthy Florentines flee the plague to a country villa and tell each other sex stories. This is roughly how some would describe the plot of the infamous Decameron. The series adaptation starts today on Netflix The Decameron.

Why is the model for the Netflix series The Decameron repeatedly censored?

The novella collection Il Decamerone by the writer Giovanni Boccaccio dates back to the mid-14th century, as The Wrap writes. Since its publication, the work has been translated into various countries banned or censored. According to the British Library, this is not least because clerical figures also appear in the erotic stories.

The title, which comes from ancient Greek, indicates the time frame of the action and describes an “event of ten days”. The Decameron has been made into a film several times, including Decameron by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

It seems doubtful whether the Netflix adaptation will achieve a similarly scandalous reputation as the original. Judging by the trailer, it is a good-natured, if raunchy, comedy.

Netflix subscribers can find out how raunchy the series really is since July 25, 2024. The Decameron consists of eight episodes and is available with Stars like Tony Hale (Arrested Development), Zosia Mamet (Mad Men) and Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education) are cast.
