After 5 years, WoW is finally removing the dumbest thing they used to scare off new players

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Newcomers to World of Warcraft were bullied at level 30 and cheated out of their gold. This is finally being eliminated and should significantly reduce the frustration.

New players in World of Warcraft have to endure something that would be an immediate reason to drop the game in other MMORPGs. At one point they literally have their gold pulled out of their pockets for something they wouldn’t otherwise have bought. It’s about time Blizzard fixed that – and finally got rid of Neltharion’s Embers in patch 10.1.

What is Blizzard changing? With the next major update (Patch 10.1), Blizzard is finally removing the restrictions on flying in Battle for Azeroth, i.e. Kul Tiras and Zandalar. Previously, this required completing a Boy Scout achievement. After the release of Patch 10.1, this requirement will be permanently removed. It is then sufficient to buy the riding ability to fly on Kul Tiras and Zandalar and to be able to complete the quests much faster.

Why is that even a problem? New players are “forced” by World of Warcraft to level their first character in Battle for Azeroth. This is the most well-rounded gaming experience, offering a solid storyline with modern quests to quickly level 60 and then travel to the Dragon Isles. Later characters can then level up in any other expansion using Chromie Time – but the first hero must go to Battle for Azeroth.

So as new players level up on Kul Tiras and Zandalar, they will get a quest every 10 levels to return to the Riding Instructor and learn a better level of riding at a time.

Especially level 30 is an important moment, because the heroes are promised that in the future they will be able to ride through the air on flying mounts. Learning this skill is quite expensive for a fresh level 30 character (nearly 300 gold) and should eat up pretty much all the gold that character has.

It was all the more frustrating then, after purchasing the flying ability, going back to Kul Tiras or Zandalar only to find that the flying ability can’t be used there. Because if you want to fly in “Battle for Azeroth”, you first have to complete a very long pathfinder success. This achievement is so long-lasting that new players can only get it long after they’ve left those areas behind.

Worse, WoW doesn’t even clearly reveal why a character can’t fly despite acquiring the ability. New players feel cheated and confused out of all their gold. Especially in the “Newcomer” channel, there are always confused and then angry questions about what happened there.

Or to make it short, WoW encourages new players to put all their gold into a flying ability that they can’t even use where they’re playing.

It’s about time that was finally a thing of the past.
