Love Fallout 76, but FPS is giving you the same headaches as mine? Then I can reassure you, because those times are over for the next-gen consoles. So fire up your consoles and wander from now on with a wonderful 60 FPS through the wasteland.
Fallout 76 has had a lot going on since its release in 2018. Bugs, low FPS and stutters, broken and forbidden items that divided the community. Much time has passed since then and so have many problems disappeared from the West Virginia woods.
The only thing that bothered me and a few other players is the game’s performance. The delivered 30 FPS were not only ugly, but often disturbed the experience in Fallout 76. As a result, I could neither enjoy the game nor play without complaints, because I always got a headache after 2-3 hours of grind.
So I’ve been hoping since my beginnings 2 years ago that Bethesda would finally take pity and do a next-gen patch or upgrade to at least polish the new consoles – to no avail – until today.
Bethesda is always up for a surprise, because the developers released their latest update “When the stars are right” on June 20th. The update brought not only new bosses, weapons, and events, but also some Quality of Life improvements.
A big update like the previous ones, which always ushered in a new season, but this time it was different. So I downloaded the 23GB to my PS5 and wanted to revisit Fallout 76. However, as I examined the menu and the new game board, I noticed that the visuals were smoother.
I didn’t want to voice my suspicion lest I end up disappointed, so I loaded a public world and logged in. When I got to West Tek, I moved my player and immediately threw my controller on the sofa. I couldn’t realize I was watching Fallout 76 – at 60 FPS.
A secret change that no one would have expected, because the developers didn’t mention anything about it in their patch notes (via fallout.bethesda.net). I even read it through three times and couldn’t find anything about it. A mistake or intentional? Well, both cannot be ruled out and without confirmation from the developers we can only speculate.
For my part, however, I believe that this is intentional. Bethesda had already announced in advance (via fallout.bethesda.net) that Fallout 4 would shine in new splendor. Players should be able to play the fourth installment in the series in 4k and at 60 FPS in 2023 when the next-gen update is released.
It’s not yet known when the next-gen update for Fallout 4 will be released, but I think the improved performance in Fallout 76 should be a first step in that direction. A gift and a test to see if the plans behind the Fallout 4 revamp are bearing fruit – and they are.
In addition, this secret change shows me that the developers have not forgotten their online game and their community. They are constantly working to further develop the game and for me as a passionate fan of the Wasteland I can only welcome such a step.
If you put Fallout 76 aside because of the graphics, then I can understand you. But with this change, you might want to give the game another chance. Personally, I felt like playing Fallout 76 again and this time I was even able to put my controller away without a headache.
Were you as surprised as I was by this change, or did you expect that Bethesda was already working on a revamped variant for the next-gen? Let me know in the comments!
