After 22 years of service, Skype will bow out in May 2025. Défussed by competition, notably WhatsApp and Zoom, the audio-video call platform will give way to its replacement, Microsoft Teams.

A page in computer history will turn! Skype, which has been for many years the application par excellence for online video calls, will bow out, after 22 years of good and loyal service! The teams of XDA Developers have indeed discovered, in the code of the latest version of Skype, the following message: “From May, Skype will no longer be available. Continue your calls and discussions on Teams.“”

A decision that is hardly surprising since, little by little, the platform gradually lost its attraction in favor of other solutions like Zoom and Google Meet, especially with the explosion of telework. Microsoft himself seemed to have abandoned him in favor of Teams, much more professional-which did not prevent her from so conquering individuals. However, the company continued to offer updates, against and against everything … so far.

End of Skype: a platform supplanted by competition

Launched in 2003, Skype was a pioneer in VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol), by allowing Internet users to make free voice calls between several users thanks to the Internet. The application quickly found its audience and is bought by Ebay two years later. Little by little, the platform wins very interesting new functions, such as instant messaging, file sharing, video calls and online conferences.

In 2011, Skype was finally bought by the Géant Microsoft for the modest sum of 8.5 billion dollars and must become the official communication platform of Windows, Xbox and Office. This will never be the case, as evidenced by its more than complicated integration in Windows 10. Skype is finally absent from Windows 11, replaced by Teams.

Microsoft will have attempted everything to maintain the online online call platform, in particular with an update in 2023, which offering a modernized interface, new practical functions, a tab for news and a real -time audio translation (see our article). But unfortunately that was not enough in the face of the explosion of messaging like WhatsApp, and social platforms like Discord and Zoom … On the side of Microsoft, Teams experienced an explosion of its popularity with the pandemic, by seducing individuals and taking advantage of the boom of telework, permanently supplanting Skype. It is now time to conclude the adventure.
