Luckily, it didn’t take 28 years, even if the title suggests otherwise. With 28 Years Later, the zombie saga that began in 2002 with Danny Boyle’s genre milestone 28 Days Later will be continued with a third film next year after a break of 17 years. Now it has been surprisingly announced that the horror series will definitely continue after this: Part 4 is already being filmed!
After 28 Years Later, the zombie series gets a 4th part
28 Days Later is one of the defining zombie films of this millennium. Director Danny Boyle’s battle for survival against rampaging infected on the streets of London, captured in rough, shaky images, is considered groundbreaking for the revival of the zombie genre in the early 2000s. A sequel, 28 Weeks Later, followed five years later, but Juan Carlos Fresnadillo took the director’s chair.

Next year, the series will be expanded to include a third part, which will again be directed by Danny Boyle. The screenplay will again be written by Alex Garland. 28 Years Later features a well-known cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Jack O’Connell (Back to Black) and Ralph Fiennes (The Menu). In addition, Oscar winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) returns as Jim, a full 23 years after his appearance in the original.
As THR reports, that’s not all. It was already known that 28 Years Later could be the start of a new zombie trilogy. Now these plans are becoming more concrete. After the production of 28 Years Later was only recently completed in July, the Filming the next sequelas producer Andrew Macdonald revealed at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
The script for 28 Years Later: Part II is again directed by Alex Garland. The production will be directed by Candyman director Nia DaCosta. Nothing is known about the plot or cast of the sequel.
When will 28 Years Later be in cinemas?
Sony is releasing the horror sequel 28 Years Later on June 19, 2025 in German cinemas. It is not yet known when the next chapter of the zombie saga will start.
