African mask sold at auction for close to 50 million

An elderly couple in Alès, France, sold an African mask to a scrap dealer for just over 150 euros. The mask was resold at auction, where it was hammered for 4.2 million euros, equivalent to approximately 50 million kroner.

The couple have now sued the scrap dealer who they believe misled them about the mask’s value. The merchant, for his part, claims that he had no idea of the actual value of the mask.
