On August 15, 2021, the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, after two decades of American intervention. Since their fall in 2001, they have managed to rebuild their strength and consolidate their influence in rural areas of the country. Today, the whole world is witnessing the actions of this brutal Islamic regime. Actions which raise many questions about the stability of the region, the question of human rights and fundamental freedoms – and which plunge the country into one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. How did we get here ? Jean-Charles Jauffret, emeritus professor of contemporary history at Sciences Po Aix, specialist in Afghanistan, answers questions from RFI.
