Aerial protection: drone team saves fawns from mowers

Aerial protection drone team saves fawns from mowers

Early in the morning, when most people are still in deep rest, the day already starts for Ruud Elbertse, an enthusiastic volunteer of the Kromme Rijn Game Management Unit. Together with the drone team, he visits farmers and estate owners in the region. Armed with a drone with a thermal camera, they look from the air for signs of wildlife among the dense grass. This early time is crucial as they can take advantage of the coolness of the morning and avoid the heat of the rising sun. The sun’s rays transform everyday objects such as wooden posts and molehills into spots with the same brightness as a newborn fawn. That’s why they start so early and can serve one, two or sometimes even three customers in the morning. A true dedication, because if they have to be somewhere at 5 o’clock, Ruud has to get out of bed at 4.30 am.
