How often has the Asian hornet been spotted this year and where?

The data on Waarneming.nl shows that Friesland and Groningen are the only provinces where no confirmed report of an Asian hornet has been made. Flevoland lost that status this year, when a queen was found building a nest in Almere on May 18.

In Utrecht, a confirmed sighting of a queen in Odijk was received on May 29. Last year Asian hornets were seen in Zeist, Leersum and Amersfoort. In 2021 they were not seen. The first observations were made in 2020 in Veenendaal.

A nest-building queen was also recently found in Hooghalen in Drenthe. That was on May 21. Last year there were no confirmed reports. The first confirmed sightings of Asian hornets in Drenthe date from 2021, near Meppel.

In Gelderland, a queen was found on May 21 in Winterswijk, and on May 4 in Lunteren. The first Gelderland finds were made last year near Groesbeek, Nijmegen, Wijchen, Apeldoorn and Ede.

No confirmed finds of Asian hornets have been made in Overijssel this year. Last year they were spotted for the first time in Markelo.

In North Holland, a queen was found in Aalsmeer on May 13. Last year Asian hornets were found in IJmuiden, Velserbroek and Zaandam. In 2021 they were not seen. In 2020 there was a discovery in Den Helder and the first report dates from 2018, on a boat in Amsterdam.

Queens were found this year in 6 places in South Holland, at Sliedrecht, Hoogvliet, Hoek van Holland, Rotterdam, Schiedam and Oud-Beijerland. Since the first find in 2018, about 75 confirmed sightings have been made in South Holland.

In Limburg, about 15 confirmed reports of queens have been made this year. Since 2020, when the first find was made, hundreds of confirmed reports have been made.

About 40 finds of queens have been reported in North Brabant this year. The Asian hornet was first seen here in 2019, in Raamsdonk. Hundreds of confirmed reports were submitted in the following years.

The first find of the Asian hornet in the Netherlands was made in 2017 in Dreischor in Zeeland. About 100 queens have been found this year, many of them killed to prevent them from making a nest. In recent years, hundreds of confirmed reports have been made in Zeeland.
