Last Thursday, a sequence in TPMP revived the theory of adrenochrome, a supposed drug taken from the blood of children, used by the elite to stay eternally young. But what is this molecule really? And why are we conspiratorial?

The scene is surreal, and yet almost normal for the regulars of the show Do not touch My TV. Last Thursday, the guest Gérard Fauché, a former cocaine trafficker, said without being interrupted that celebrities like Céline Dion or Pierre Palmade, would consume adrenochrome, “a drug made from blood taken from 3-year-old children”. And Cyril Hanouna to support without any retreat: “And Gérard brings up something that is real, there are a lot of people on the networks who say it exists”. Since then, Arcom, the media regulator, has been seized on charges of conspiracy. But what is adrenochrome?

What is adrenochrome? Does it exist?

Adrenochrome does exist, but is not a substance produced from the blood of young children (fortunately!). Adrenochrome is a simple molecule (formula C9 H9 NO3) produced naturally by oxidation of adrenaline. It is not a medicine, much less a drug, and it would not have any psychoactive or hallucinogenic effects.

This is why this molecule is legal and does not appear in the list of narcotic substances established by the Ministry of Health in France. In PointBernard Basset, president of the association Addictions France, also affirms that the use of this molecule is by far overestimated by conspirators.

The consumption of adrenochrome for psychoactive purposes is a pure myth“, he says. “The molecule has no known hallucinogenic effects, or even medical use.”

A theory invented in a film

The version peddled on social networks and by certain conspiracy theories is slightly more “dramatic”: to produce this adrenochrome, 3-year-old children would therefore be taken from their parents, and their blood, filled with adrenaline, would be taken, to produce the most powerful drug in the world, with regenerative properties. A somewhat crazy theory, which would come back since the 1960s, popularized in particular in a book by Hunter Stockton Thompson Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” which will give the film “Las Vegas Parano” with Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro.

In a scene of the film, Johnny Depp indeed takes a drug called “adrenochrome”, a drug bought from a dealer with satanist delusions, attacking children… By the admission of director Terry Gilliam, the he story is totally invented for the screenplay of the film. The theory, not based on anything, seems however to continue on its way…
