“Adolescence” is a British mini-series which has completely seduced criticism. But some Netflix subscribers remained hungry. We explain to you what to understand the series.
Since its posting on Thursday March 13, 2025, Adolescence Throne at first place in the top of the moment series on Netflix. And it is amply deserved: this punch program by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne is a feat both on his themes and on his execution. It dissects the mechanisms of toxic masculinity, which is to grow at 13 years in today’s digital society, but also the cleavage between today’s adolescents and their parents. All in four episodes, each of which is a sequence plan, filmed in real time and without any break, for more immersion.
Real prowess of substantive and form welcomed by criticism (of which we are part), Adolescence However, did not convince all subscribers. On social networks, some did not hide their disappointment by discovering the end of the series. Recall that the series begins on the arrest of Jamie, a 13 -year -old boy, accused of the murder of a classmate. Where some can expect a classic police series, which will emphasize the investigation and the resolution of the murder, it is ultimately nothing. And it’s done on purpose, because the survey is not the subject of the Netflix program. Below, we explain to you what to understand the series, and its final. Please note, the rest contains spoilers.
Adolescence Do not seek to make mystery of the murder of which Jamie is accused. If the boy denies for a long time to be responsible and the start of the series deliberately sows trouble, the ultimate proof of his guilt is brought at the end of the first episode: a video surveillance in which he is seen assassinating his classmate. Yes, Jamie killed Katie well. If gray areas remain and the characters continue to doubt, in particular his parents, the guilt of the boy is formal and the series does not need to insist more on all the discoveries of the investigation. The final of the series, in which Jamie admits to his parents that he will finally plead guilty, is the last confirmation that the boy has committed the murder (and that he is also ready to assume the consequences).
Netflix subscribers who seek to discover a new police series with twists and turns will probably be disappointed. But you have to have in mind thatAdolescence is not a series which is interested in the identity of the culprit or the way in which the murder was committed, but more to “why”, and especially to “why did we get there”.
The main theme of the series, highlighted in the title, is the question of what is really going on in the minds of adolescents today. Episode 2 shows the cleavage between the way in which adults perceive children and their daily reality, especially at school or online. Episode 4, for its part, highlights the cleavage between parents and adolescents through the questions of Jamie’s family, and especially his father who wonders what he could miss in the education of his child.
The young man’s motivations are also highlighted during episodes 2 and 3. Jamie suffers from bullying, has no confidence in him, and experiences shame but also anger towards women, and in particular Katie. This brings to one of the strong themes of the series: masculinity, in particular toxic. Jamie is a harassed child, but who adheres to theories of incels (men who define themselves as incapable of finding a romantic partner, because of the women themselves, and who are involuntarily single).
The last episode of the series, more intimate but overwhelming, shows that what happens to Jamie and his family could happen to anyone: the teenager grew up in a normal and loving family, surrounded by positive influences. Parents take responsibility for the acts of their child, and the father wonders what he could have done best to prevent the drama. To which the mother replied that he could do nothing more. The proof, their daughter is balanced and is likely to succeed. But they remain responsible for the actions of their child, hence the apologies that the father addresses to his son’s plush to the last scene.
