In autumn 2022, Adnan Syed was acquitted of the murder of his ex-girlfriend – after 22 years in prison. This after the case was brought to the attention of the podcast “Serial”. Now the acquittal is overturned and the murder suspicions are directed again at Syed. In 2000, Adnan Syed was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. For several years, Syed and his representatives fought hard to get the case settled. The case was also covered in the popular podcast “Serial”, which examined the evidence against him. After the podcast, the investigation was reopened, leading to Adnan Syed’s release in September 2022 – after 22 years in prison. Now comes a new twist in the case. An appeals court (the second level of trial) in Maryland has decided to overturn the acquittal, reports The Washington Post. According to the new ruling, the court that acquitted Adnan Syed improperly handled the victim’s family’s right to attend a key hearing in the case. Therefore, the acquittal may be wrong, and the conviction should apply until further notice, the appeals court believes. The Washington Post points out that it is unclear what happens after the decision. The parties to the investigation have 60 days to assess how to proceed before the appeal court’s decision comes into effect. The jury that made the decision points out that Young Lee, the victim’s brother, was not given enough time to prepare his testimony in the case. Young Lee and the rest of the family claim that the lawyer gave him information about the crucial hearing the day before it was to take place. In the decision, the jury states that Young Lee must receive better information before the negotiations, which are now expected to be redone.
