Adele warned Jennifer Lawrence about huge sci fi flop — and

Jennifer Lawrence proves she’s still a big star that gets a lot of people going to the movies in the cheeky rom-com No Hard Feelings. The American actress is best known as Katniss Everdeen in the science fiction series The Hunger Games, which includes four films in total.

After the end of the Hunger Games, Lawrence was showered with role offers. Every studio in Hollywood wanted her in theirs cast the next blockbuster. She opted for the science fiction film Passengers, which was released in 2016 … and flopped. Lawrence was even warned about the role.

Before the sci-fi crash landing: Adele warned Jennifer Lawrence about Passengers

None other than singer Adele gave Lawrence the good advice to stay away from a sci-fi film like Passengers. Lawrence revealed this in a 2022 portrait of the New York Times.

Adele had told me that I [Passengers] should not do! She said, ‘I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies.’ I should have listened to her.

Passengers is said to have swallowed up a budget of up to 150 million US dollars (excluding marketing costs). However, the worldwide grossing amounts to only to $300 million. In the USA, the most important market for the Sony studio, the film was only able to bring in 100 million US dollars, making it a flop.

Not only was Passengers a financial disappointment. The sci-fi blockbuster also fell through the criticism. With 48 registered reviews, Metacritic only comes up with an average value of 41 out of 100 points. Rotten Tomatoes has only 30 percent positive reviews, making the film a “rot” (“rotten”) is applicable.

The direction and casting of the film was particularly criticized. Passengers comes across as a glossy blockbuster, although it’s actually a dark story told. Lawrence and co-star Chris Pratt have no chemistry at all, which is unfortunate for a film that revolves entirely around two characters on a lonely spaceship. This Space Odyssey backfired in many ways.
