Director Richard Curtis reveals to Collider that he has thought a lot about the scene over the past few years problem criticized by fans recognizes. When he made the film 20 years ago, he wasn’t aware of this:

I am very often told that [Mark] is a bit too strange. It didn’t occur to me at the time, but times change. I remember someone once said they would like to interview me and be part of it focus on the stalking scene. And I said, ‘Oh, I didn’t know there was a stalking scene.’ And the person said, ‘Yes, Andrew Lincoln. There’s no more stalking.’ Slowly but surely I realized what a terrible mistake I had made.
