He died in Hawaii on Saturday in complications after a stroke, a spokesperson tells the newspaper.
“Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and hovering against the beloved who have gone before us. So blessed we were who felt such an amazing and loving soul,” says Martin Rabbett, Chamberlain’s life companion since the 1970s in a statement.
Richard Chamberlain’s career extended over many decades, but he is perhaps best known for his roles in several major television series during the 1980s. Among other things, as Father Ralph in “Törnfåglarna” and John Blackthorne in “Shogun”. The TV roles gave him the epithet “The King of Miniseries”.
Prior to that, he had played Indiana Jones trial Allan Quatermain in a couple of films and musketeer Aramis in the star-studded “the three musketeers” trilogy during the 70s.
Chamberlain was born in Beverly Hills in 1934. After military service as a sergeant during the Korean War, he entered the acting via a theater group in Los Angeles and smaller TV roles. He was given the breakthrough as a girl idol in the hospital drama “Dr Kildare”, which was broadcast on American television in the early 1960s.
