Kylo Ren turns out to be nicer than planned

How was Kylo Ren’s story supposed to go? Adam Driver shared in the interview how his character’s story was originally envisioned by JJ Abrams:

“His idea was that [Kylos] Journey is the opposite journey of Vader, with Vader being the most confident and committed to the dark side at the beginning. And then, in the final film, he is the most vulnerable and weakest. He wanted to start with the opposite. This character was the most confused and vulnerable, and by the end of the three films he would be the most beholden to the dark side.”

When did the plan change to Kylo Ren? As the actor explained, the original concept of the character was continued in the second film of the trilogy under director Rian Johnson – even if he already took the antagonist’s story in a slightly different direction.

It wasn’t until the third film that it was decided to give the antagonist a redemption arc and send him back to the good side of power.

It was also not originally planned that Kylo Ren would develop into Ben Solo as a person again, as the actor continued: “He was Ben Solo from the beginning, but there was never a version in which we would see Ben Solo, than me for it [für die Rolle] had signed.”
