Acea wins European financing for smart network in Rome

Acea goes up on the stock exchange with new regulation

(Finance) – Acea, as part of a transnational consortium made up of 44 partners among the main European research institutions and companies, has been awarded European funding for a project designed to develop and test in Rome a cutting-edge technological solution capable of enabling flexibility of electricity consumption of Energy Communities (called “Hedge IoT”). The results of
this experimentation will be important for the project of the energy communities of Rome Capital and the energy and social objectives that we intend to pursue.

The leader of the project is Areti who will collaborate with Roma Capitale, Roma Tre University and ACEA Energia. The project, starting these days, will last 4 years.

“Hedge IoT” will aim to enable and exploit the potential of energy flexibility for different typologies, from heat pumps to emergency generators or cogenerators, to electric vehicle charging stations, while allowing participation in the optimal operation of distribution network through the offer of ancillary services to the local distributor – and in particular to the RomeFlex local flexibility services market created by GME and Areti – and the socialization of the surplus energy generated and not self-consumed with a set of vulnerable consumers at high risk of energy poverty.

Within the Energy Community established by the Roma Tre University with Municipality VIII, the Roma Tre University (with the Roma Tre University already acting as Balancing Service Provider as the successful bidder of a significant share of power in the first auction end of RomeFlex which took place last November) will be the fulcrum of the Italian “Hedge IoT” project, effectively becoming a supplier of flexibility services: within the Roma Tre University, distributed generation systems from renewable sources will be created associated with intelligent storage capable of optimizing local energy self-consumption. This infrastructure will be equipped with a series of IoT technologies capable of detecting instantaneous production and consumption behaviors and subordinating them to software platforms for managing the Energy Community whose task will be to maximize the energy efficiency of the Community itself and to communicate with the Rome’s electricity network managed by Areti to use surplus energy on the local flexibility market. Roma Capitale will instead take care of all aspects of socialization and redistribution of the excess energy value generated by the Roma Tre University in addition to the replicability initiatives of the solutions developed on the other Energy Communities being implemented in the Capital. That of Roma Tre
it will be one of the first energy communities established under the Roma Capitale CE Plan.
