A man charged on suspicion of killing his comrade in Kalix was set free when the trial ended on Friday, local media reports.

The prosecutor had demanded that the man be sentenced to 16 years in prison.

– The district court has not said why he was released, therefore I cannot comment on the decision. There are various reasons, but I do not want to speculate, but await the verdict, says prosecutor Rickard Finnberg to Norrbottens-Kuriren.

At the beginning of November last year, the police were alerted to an address in Kalix where a man was found dead. A 55-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

He was previously indicted in January on suspicion of murder. According to the prosecutor, the man had strangled the other.

The suspect has denied any wrongdoing and said it was a matter of self-defense.

The verdict will be announced in February.
