Helldivers 2 has caused disappointment among players and developers with a nerf in the latest update. The CEO takes a stand.
Which update is it? The “Escalation of Freedom” update is considered the biggest update to the game so far and was released on August 6th. It brought some new features such as a new difficulty level, new enemies and a new system that saves your loot if you get griefed.
However, the change that received the most attention from the community was a change that nerfed the flamethrower. Fire should now behave more realistically and no longer penetrate certain bodies. This means that the flamethrower can no longer eliminate attackers.
But the development team’s general nerf policy is also being criticized. After all, it’s not the first time that a patch has really pissed off Helldiver players.

Arrowhead CEO comments
What does the CEO say about the update? Shams Jorjani, CEO of Arrowhead, commented on Discord when asked how the developers view the update. He replied that the team behind the co-op shooter was also dissatisfied. They put a lot of work into the update and it contains some good things that nobody talks about. Shams said that of course they understand that people are dissatisfied with the latest adjustments and that they will learn from it.
He also says they need the changes to see what players want and ends his post with the words “But it’s equally clear that just talking about it isn’t enough. Actions must follow.”
Since Helldivers 2 has often taken a path with balance changes that players did not like, some players on Reddit doubted the CEO’s words.
The fans remain skeptical
What does the community say about the CEO’s statements? It quickly becomes clear on Reddit that players don’t fully trust the CEO’s statements. They have apparently heard it too many times and claim that it’s always the same thing and that they are generally unhappy with the weapon adjustments.
Nerfs are often a reaction from developers to weapons that are too strong or are played much more than other weapons. This also applies to many nerfs in Helldivers 2 and one player found out that it was a bug: The Helldivers 2 community has found out who is to blame for the nerfs of their favorite weapons: a bug Community News
