The new rules
Since July 1, it is only permitted to keep, sell or breed animals that are on the so-called pet and hobby list for mammals. Anyone who has a mammal that is not on the list may keep it until it dies, but breeding with it is no longer permitted.
The new list replaces the positive list for mammals, which until recently allowed keeping almost all mammal species. The old list contained 320 mammals, the new list contains thirty.
There has been a debate for thirty years about which animals are and are not suitable as pets. Six scientists spent five years compiling the new list. A similar list failed in court in 2017 because it was not sufficiently substantiated.
