As relations between Syria and Turkey enter a new era, and moderate messages have been given mutually by Bashar Assad and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. While the necessary steps are planned to be taken to re-establish a dialogue environment between the countries, one of the key figures expected to take part in those talks, Assad’s special advisor Luna El Shibil, had a traffic accident on one of the roads leading to Damascus on Tuesday afternoon.

Sibil, who was seriously injured when the vehicle carrying her skidded off the road, could not be saved despite all interventions in the hospital she was taken to.
ACCIDENT OR ASSASSINATION?
There were various reports that there was a mysterious situation surrounding the incident, and that an armored vehicle had hit the car from behind, pushing it into the middle of the road. According to another report, there was a metal support at the front of the car that hit him, which caused al-Shibil to suffer a serious brain hemorrhage.
Shibil, who lost her life, was expected to be an important actor in possible talks between Turkey and Syria. In addition, Shibil’s general husband was recently arrested by the Iran-backed Hashd al-Shaabi in a special operation from Assad’s palace in Damascus.
WHO IS LUNA SHIBIL?
Born in 1975 in the Syrian city of Sweida, Shibil worked for Qatar’s Al Jazeera television between 2003 and 2010. Coming from a Druze family, Shibil had been working as Assad’s “Special Media Advisor” in the Syrian Presidential Political and Communications Office since 2020.
