HIV crisis threatens Argentina after cuts

The budget for free HIV/AIDS treatment in Argentina will be halved next year. This is on top of the 67 percent reduction already implemented this year, reports The Nation.

Now HIV patients and doctors in the country fear that President Javier Milei’s cutbacks will lead to an increase in HIV infections and that patients will be deprived of vital treatment.

According to the country’s health authority, 140,000 people live with HIV in Argentina. About half of these are dependent on publicly funded treatment in the healthcare system.

President Milei calls his ongoing austerity campaign the “chainsaw”, and is his way of reversing the deep budget deficit in the country.
